Who is The Nor’east Uprising anyway?

The Nor'east Uprising (NEU) is a Massachusetts nonprofit and a brand new roller derby league created by passionate coaches, parents, and fans. Our goal is to develop a competitive junior roller derby league from the ground up, making sure every skater knows the basic skills and fundamentals necessary to advance to the next level of play. We aim to create and maintain a welcoming environment for all individuals regardless of gender, race, or creed.

What’s the team's ultimate goal?

At Nor'east Uprising, we aim to foster a competitive and supportive environment for all our members. Our ultimate goal is to develop a competitive travel team, which we believe will benefit the growth of the entire league on and off the track. We also strive to maintain an open and inclusive culture where all members feel valued and welcomed. By promoting a strong competitive spirit, we hope to inspire our coaches and players to continuously improve their skills and teamwork, both on and off the track.

What are you looking for?

To make our program successful, we are looking for coaches who share our passion for the sport and are committed to helping young athletes develop their skills.

Our goal is to create a team of coaches who can work together to provide a high-quality coaching experience. To achieve this, we plan to have a rotating team of coaches. This approach allows for flexibility in scheduling and helps to alleviate any commitment issues that individual coaches may have due to their busy schedules.

We believe that using this structure will also give our skaters the best opportunity to receive an expansive wealth of knowledge and expertise.

All that said, we would like if interested coaches could commit to at least one practice per month

How often? When? And Where?

We practice Tuesday nights and Sunday mornings at Forrest's Family Fun Center in Taunton, Ma.

What will be expected of me as a coach?

As a coach for NEU, you will play an essential role in our goal to develop a competitive travel team. We believe that a strong coaching team is key to creating a challenging, fun, and inclusive environment where our skaters can thrive both on and off the track.

We understand that coaching can be a time-consuming task, which is why we will be implementing various tools to make it as seamless as possible. These tools include a Google doc for coach sign-ups and curriculum, as well as Heja, a communication app with features that will aid in coaching, administration, and skater communication.

As part of our coaching team, you will have the opportunity to help develop and implement our training program. We have gathered a wealth of information from other successful junior derby leagues, and we aim to utilize this information to create a program that will challenge our skaters while still being fun and rewarding. As a coach, you will have the privilege of witnessing the growth and progress of our skaters as they develop both on and off the track.

Who will I be coaching?

We have skaters of varying skill and experience from new skaters to our travel team the NEU All-Stars. All of our skaters are aged between 8 and 18, We currently have about 40 skaters, some of whom have skated or still skate with other juniors leagues including, PRD Juniors, NEJRD, Monadnock, Cape Cod, and New Hampshire.

Are there any coaches already involved?

Yes, we have several coaches on our coaching team. They are some of the most passionate derby people we’ve met and we would not be to this point without them! For more on our coaches check out the Meet The Coaches tab under the About NEU menu

What will the practices look like?

During practices we will typically divide the skaters into groups: beginners (levels 0-2),  advanced skaters (levels 2.5-3), and Travel Team. Our goal is to have one coach for every ten skaters who are under level 3. By doing this, we can ensure that each skater receives the guidance they need to reach their full potential.

I’d like to coach but my child would need to be with me, is that okay?

It sure is! We'd love to have them as part of our league, whether its the Uprising or the Flurries!
